Refreshing for Spring—Without Your Phone🌸❄️
Winter has its charm—cozy sweaters, holiday vibes, and an excuse to stay inside—but let’s be real.
Winter has its charm—cozy sweaters, holiday vibes, and an excuse to stay inside—but let’s be real: by the time spring rolls around, many of us are feeling sluggish, glued to our screens, and in need of a reset. As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to shake off winter’s chill and refresh both physically and mentally—without reaching for your phone every five minutes.
Here’s how to transition into spring, get outside, and embrace the new season screen-free.
1. Get Outside and Move
There’s no better way to shake off winter sluggishness than getting outdoors. Even if you don’t consider yourself the “outdoorsy” type, fresh air and movement can do wonders for your mood and energy. Try:
Morning Walks or Sunset Strolls – Start or end your day with a simple walk around your neighborhood or a local park. Bonus points if you go barefoot in the grass (it’s called grounding, and it’s actually good for you).
Biking Adventures – Grab a friend and explore new paths around your city. No GPS, just instinct.
Outdoor Yoga or Stretching – Find a quiet spot in the backyard, at a park, or even on your porch. Let the sunshine replace your usual screen light.
Plant Something – Even if it’s just one herb in a pot, getting your hands in the dirt is a great way to feel connected to the season.
2. Refresh Your Wardrobe (and Your Space)
Spring is all about feeling lighter—both in what we wear and in the spaces we live in.
Clothing: Swap heavy layers for breezy, comfortable pieces. Think loose linen, cotton tees, flowy dresses, and sneakers that make you want to walk everywhere. Light, pastel, or nature-inspired colors can help get you in the spring mindset.
Declutter: If your room still looks like it’s stuck in January, take an afternoon to refresh it. Open the windows, swap out thick blankets for lighter ones, and put away anything that screams “winter hibernation.”
Thrift or Upcycle: Instead of shopping for new clothes, try thrifting or swapping clothes with friends. You’d be surprised how a simple wardrobe change can make you feel like a whole new person.
3. Reconnect—With People, Not Screens
A lot of us rely on our phones to stay connected, but real-life interactions hit differently. Challenge yourself to make plans that don’t involve texting or social media.
Host a No-Phone Picnic – Pack some food, bring a book, a journal, or a frisbee, and invite friends to do the same.
Start a Book Swap – Instead of endless scrolling, read something real. Exchange books with friends and discuss them.
Write Letters or Make Art – A handwritten letter to a friend or even doodling in a sketchbook can be a mindful way to unplug.
4. Create a Spring Morning or Night Routine
Winter habits can be hard to shake, especially when they involve staying up late on TikTok. Instead of immediately reaching for your phone in the morning or before bed, try:
Morning: Wake up, stretch, drink water, step outside for a few breaths of fresh air before checking any notifications.
Night: Journaling, reading, or even just listening to music (without scrolling) before bed can help signal your brain to slow down.
5. Try Something New—Just Because
Spring is about renewal, so why not try something new?
A New Hobby – Pottery, baking, gardening, or learning an instrument—pick something totally random and see where it takes you.
Ditch the Algorithms for Discovery – Instead of letting an app tell you what to listen to or watch, ask a friend for a playlist, visit a library, or walk into a bookstore and pick something at random.
Go Somewhere New – Even if it’s just a different park, café, or part of your town, changing up your scenery can be a simple way to refresh your mindset.
Spring, But Make It Intentional
Spring is a reset button, but it’s up to us to actually use it. Taking even a little time away from screens—whether it’s a whole day or just an hour—can make a huge difference in how we feel. So put your phone down, step outside, and let yourself experience the season. Winter had its time; now it’s time to wake up to spring.
Love these ideas!
I want to share one little fun one:
If I ever feel like there's too many things I want to do that I can't decide (write, draw, read, research, scholarships, etc.) I just roll a 6-sided dice and let chance decide for me. It's so fun!
Another thing I've done that works quite well: the day before I have off (the weekend) I'll write a sticky note with the priorities I want to do for the next day before I check my phone. When I go to grab my phone in the morning I see the sticky note right there, and instead grab that and do the things I need to do while I'm still relaxed and focused. It's almost like my past self is looking out for me
This is my new favorite from In The Loop! I’m 30 and I read these religiously — so proud of the work y’all are doing. Jotted so many Spring notes and ideas down from this. Thank you!
